Reading

At Bishop Lonsdale we encourage all children to be readers who share a passion for books and reading. We promote reading as a lifetime learning skill which provides children with enjoyment and excitement and an opportunity to gain information about the world around them.

The teaching of reading focuses on word reading (decoding and developing fluency) and comprehension (understanding).

Across the school, children have many opportunities to read. From EYFS through to the end of KS1 children are taught to decode words using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Phonics Scheme (see the Phonics page for further information). In addition, reading is taught through Little Wandle Reading Practice Sessions and whole class reading where children learn to comprehend using the Super 6 Reading Skills.

In KS2 children continue to develop their reading fluency. In reading lessons, comprehension skills are developed through the use of a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. Children are taught these skills as a whole class and in small groups in order to facilitate high quality discussion and participation. During these lessons children are taught 6 skills that enable them to comprehend what they have read. These Bishop Lonsdale Super 6 Reading Skills can be found as an attachment on this page.

Time is given during the school day for children to read their staged reading book independently and they also have regular opportunity to read one to one with an adult. There are other opportunities for children to read as each class has its own reading corner with a selection of age appropriate books. Children are also encouraged to use the school library where they can borrow books to take home to read for pleasure.  All classes have a daily story read to them by an adult. Parents are encouraged to support their children with reading at home.
We had author Mrs Quarmby talk to the children about her new book 'The Adventures Below'. Children were inspired by her and learned how to take an idea and turn it into something special.
