Reading

Here at Bishop Lonsdale, we understand that there are few things as powerful as developing a love of reading from a young age. This is why books and stories are at the heart of everything we do.

We do this by making stories fun, engaging and a way to share experiences and connect.  Each week we read and really get to know a new focus book. Children have the opportunity to explore these books and stories in play through small world, puppets and role play.  We have created cosy corners, inside and out, where children can sit to read and share books with friends and our favourite time of day is our class story before we go home. The children also love reading books recommended by the adults in school!

Children learn how to read through phonics. They learn to read letters by saying the sounds they represent. They can then start to read words by blending individual sounds together to make words. Please use the link below to view more information on how we teach phonics

Bishop Lonsdale Church of England Primary School and Nursery - Phonics

Each week, children have the opportunity to take home a story bag to share with their families. Inside, you will find a book to read and activities to do, as well as some puppet to play with and re-tell the story.
In our cosy reading corners, children will find familiar stories that they know and love. Here they can settle down to read a book or share a story with a friend.
